Is Your Campus Truly Secure?
Why this matters now:
In the first three quarters of 2024, educational institutions across South Africa — including schools, universities, and colleges — recorded 13 murders, 24 attempted murders, 318 assaults with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and 106 rapes, 15 of them at tertiary institutions (PMC). While schools account for most of the victims, universities are by no means immune. These figures represent only the tip of the iceberg, as underreporting remains a significant concern (ResearchSpace, ResearchGate).
Gender-based violence, unsafe infrastructure, substandard student housing, and weak institutional safety policies continue to amplify the risks faced on campuses. While comprehensive and up-to-date national statistics specific to universities remain limited, the available evidence paints a deeply concerning picture. There is already more than enough data to underscore an urgent need for stronger and more proactive safety measures.
This places universities across South Africa under mounting pressure to safeguard students, staff, and assets against rising crime and growing security breaches.
In this hard-hitting plenary, Walleed will demonstrate how cutting-edge technology, real-time data, and integrated response systems are transforming campus security. Expect eye-opening insights into today’s challenges, as well as practical strategies you can adopt immediately to strengthen the safety and resilience of your institution.
