Infrastructure Portfolio Project Director , University of Venda (UNIVEN)
Simeshni (Sue) Govender is the Infrastructure Portfolio Project Director at UNIVEN, where she leads the strategic delivery of major infrastructure and sustainability projects. With expertise in project execution, delivery management, and construction procurement, she has built a strong track record in higher education infrastructure planning and governance.
At UNIVEN, she is driving the University’s vision of a “Smart and Sustainable Campus” through critical recovery projects, modern teaching and learning spaces, and renewable energy innovations. Central to this work is the multi-phase, multi-megawatt solar PV and battery storage facility, a flagship initiative aimed at reducing grid reliance, lowering operating costs, and advancing institutional resilience while contributing to South Africa’s energy transition.
Ms Govender is equally committed to aligning infrastructure investments with community engagement and student success. She sees renewable energy adoption not only as a technical solution but also as a strategic catalyst for long-term growth and sustainability. She is honoured to share UNIVEN’s journey at PURCO SA’s platform on renewable energy in higher education.

Renewable Energy in HEIs in South Africa, a case study at Univen
The adoption of renewable energy is not only a strategic choice but a critical necessity for ensuring the uninterrupted operations of higher education institutions.
This case study highlights the development of a solar power facility at the University of Venda. The project, with an initial capacity of 1 megawatt and designed for potential expansion to 3–5 megawatts, aims to provide a sustainable and environmentally friendly energy solution for the University.
By reducing dependence on conventional energy sources and lowering carbon emissions, this initiative supports both operational resilience and the University’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability.
